Alberto Contador kept the yellow jersey (maillot jaune) through today's stage finish. The very jersey he took from Andy Schleck yesterday when he created all that controversy. Contador passed Schleck just as Andy's bike suffered a "mechanical problem" (dropped chain). Andy was forced to stop to fix the problem when Contador passed him up and then proceeded to pursue an attack led by fellow Spaniard Samuel Sanchez which also involved Russian Denis Menchov. Schleck went as far as calling out Contador after yesterday's race and said that the Spaniard showed "no fair play". During the beginning of yesterday's stage 15, Schleck led in GC by 31 seconds over 2nd place rider Contador. By the end of the controversial race, Contador had taken the lead and the yellow jersey and was leading Schleck by 8 seconds who was now in second place.
At the start of today's stage 16, both riders had "made peace" and no lines were drawn and no attacks were made against one another. Contador's Team Astana did hold together at the front of the peloton during today's stage surrounding Alberto to provide him with the security and protection which teams often do for their leader especially when he is wearing the maillot jaune.
