2011 Men's NCAA Final Four: IMO...ESPiN commentators are "full of it"!

ESPN commentator's Jake Crawford and Dana Jacobson opened this mornings First Take by congratulating in a somewhat ESPN-snide-like fashion this years men's "Final Four" teams, and the two entrants who got the bracket right. Someone also insinuated that the two correct entries must have been from fans...(verbatim)..."they are probably V.C.U. fans". Maybe the two entries were made by V.C.U. fans...maybe so - maybe no, but I think it is great that just two entrants got it ("final four") right. Even if it was from respective fans or a fluke or pure luck.
As for the tourney itself,
I have no problem with the field of teams representing the final four tourney. However, I do have a problem with those other two ESPiN desk commentators who have a problem with the four teams, they are one Rob Parker and Skip ('Mr. Cynical') Bayless. Both insinuated that some of the teams in the final four (e.g. V.C.U.) did not even deserve a bid into the tourney of 68 teams. Adding that the final four this year is boring since no dominant teams are being represented, boring since no power-house teams made the final four...they rated this final four tourney low because no number 1 ranked team will be in Houston. Dana was actually the only one who went to bat for the tourney. She is excited about the teams going to Houston for the 'big dance"...excited about the odds that these very four teams have a shot at the National Championship. I totally agree with Dana.
I am tired of sport's pundits/commentators bitching and complaining about how boring tournaments are when the usual power-house teams are no where to be seen in the finals. Oh, yeah, just like the stupid (BCS) computers always get it right and pick the right teams for a shot at the NCAA BCS National Championship Game. For the past few years, the BCS has gotten it wrong more often that right. The difference between the NCAA football championship and basketball championship for yours truly is this: the former allows a machine to pick the teams it deems deserving - the latter allows all 68 teams to vie for a shot at the championship - a true tournament - a true play-off system.
If Skip has an issue with the likes of V.C.U. and their
"mediocrity" and keeps saying that the Rams do not belong in the tourney, I admit that is his right to say it. "Stupid is as stupid says!". But the fact is that V.C.U did receive a bid; they won the games they had to win - in their own conference tourney and in this one. One-game-at-a time the Rams proved they did in fact deserve to be part of "the big dance". Their (V.C.U.) performance during the regular season may have been lacking but the beauty of this "March Madness" tournament is that all teams get to clear their slate when it begins - the Rams are no exception. The big difference between this year's Final Four teams is that V.C.U. is the only team that had to play one extra game during round one (beating USC 59-46), the rest of the teams in this years Final Four officially began their tourney during round two. V.C.U. made their way into the "big dance" this year in part to the change in the tournament rules of recently added teams (added in 2010 thus extending the field to 68), so fair or unfair, exciting or not exciting, the Rams earned their bid and made everyone take notice that they were here to stay. Maybe just maybe teams like V.C.U. deserve "to dance" more so than the usual power-houses like Kansas who made their way into the tourney in a slothfulness, entitled fashion and clearly choked. No one says the Rams are overall better than the Jayhawks, but for one game they were. The one game that actually counted, V.C.U. was indeed better than Kansas!

2011 Men's NCAA Final Four: Fantabulous (IMO)..."March Madness" continues!

Bottom line is that this tournament is not a right, it is earned. Yes, it is a privilege, but an earned privilege...it is not a tourney for the entitled. Being a national power-house or being ranked at the top all season long, does not entitle any one team a shot at a national championship...each team must still show up to play each game. They should not show up thinking they will win because they are who they are or because they think they are a better team, a better university or up one level. Each team has a chance to show what they are made of during this tourney. If the big teams fail to perform during one game and they lose, then they should go home. I won't say they did not deserve to be there or that they were over-rated because that would be plain stupid to state. It simply is what it is and in this awesome tourney of 68 teams vying for the same glory, each team better show up with their "a-game" and not take anything or any team for granted.
I believe this years "Final Four" field of teams is still as exciting as when "March Madness" began. So many fans, including moi, had the likes of Ohio St. and Kansas playing for the National Championship when the "big dance" started. Instead we have four teams (none of them ranked #1) who were at best picked to make it maybe to the second round of this tourney, but not further, going to Houston for a chance to win the 2011 National Championship. Each of the four teams earned that right...one-game-at-a-time.
I am cheering for all four teams and will not be disappointed in whichever one takes home the championship...I am pulling for Butler and Kentucky (for personal reasons), but will be as elated if V.C.U. or UConn wins. I am not disappointed in not seeing the "usual suspects" in the Final Four, perhaps that scenario would have been more boring than having "cinderella" teams representing the best of the best like what is happening this year.
Excuse me as I quote the great Dick Vitale..."AWESOME, BABY!"... that is what the 2011 NCAA Final Four Tournament means to me. I am extremely excited and not at all disappointed and for certain not bored. "March Madness" continues...

2011 Men's NCAA Final Four: My bracketoloy skills are lacking!

Okay so my bracket-o-logy abilities have been lousy for the past few years. Last year every one's bracket went belly-up due to the likes of "cinderella teams" such as Butler. This year I fared no better, but the end results, for me, were just as exciting. Only 2 entries out of 6 million (ESPN) entries correctly picked this year's field to reach the final four. WTG to those two lone entrants!!!

I'll TaKe tHaT JOB: Coaches hired and fired - left to right!

Is it just me or has the wide world of sports gone a little nuts lately? (a.k.a. developed some cajones)? What do I mean exactly?!!
Well, humor me just for a while...is this year's firing and hiring of football coaches gone a little to the extreme or did some object land on my noggin making me more aware this year of how quick teams are these days to hire and fire their coaches.
I guess the time had to come in this world of big bucks/big games when the team owners and the respective affiliates would grow tired of losing more games than posting the ole proverbial check in the "win column"? Teams are tired of being losers. It is about time - that's what I say anyway.
I just hope that my 'Boys from Big D are beneficiaries from all these daring but "it's about freakin time" type of moves. I hope that Jason Garrett proves to be worthy of leading them to a better season than the one we just saw go so wayward. It was supposed to be the year of the Cowboys; we were supposed to see our team make the play-offs with more ease than it had seen in recent years. It was supposed to be the year that "America's Team" went to the Super Bowl. Quite fitting it would have been too as it would have seen Dallas play Super Bowl XLV in their own brand-new stadium. The first super bowl played in Cowboys Stadium' - the latest and perhaps the greatest sporting venue thus far anywhere. The inaugural season of the best stadium in the world... Maybe even the most vulgar as well when one considers the cost of bringing it to Arlington (even though Dallas-based tax dollars were voted on to build it). Equally as vulgar in how much it costs to see a game (e.g. Cowboys, NFL, collegiate, etc.) or other events during these hard economic times which sees people scrambling for jobs, money and such and most cannot afford to attend a game there. As a die-hard Dallas fan, though, I am allowed to spew out these facts, but I will not allow anyone else (e.g. Cowboy antagonists) to recite them. Kidding. Maybe not! Cowboys Stadium still rocks, and I cannot wait for the day when I can afford to attend a game -any event- there. I have seen it from afar and on the tele, but this fanatic wishes to see it in person - not picky on the event, I just want to be inside of it.
Anyway, as I was saying before my way-off tangent, it is nice to see teams finally find a back-bone and start holding respective coaches and staff accountable for their teams lousy play, mediocre performance, non-chalant and pathetic attitudes, and losing seasons. If a coach cannot bring more victories to the team within three years of being hired, then I say to the team owner(s) and all parties affected..."Go for it, fire that bum!"!!! Most of them make a huge amount of money anyway and should be set for life after three years and can afford to be fired if they cannot bring a winning season or championship to their team. The same goes for college. Fire the coaches that are less productive.
I am hoping that my Texas Tech Red Raiders are also beneficiaries of replacing losing coaches after three years on the collegiate level. I am still not convinced that Tommy Tuberville is the answer for our football program to survive the Texas Tech Admin-incited 'Coach Leach fiasco' from 2009. Tubs is not showing us much even if it is his first year as HC for Tech. I have said it time after time over a million times, Tuberville inherited a heckuva team when he -off the record- agreed to play "scab" an entire year before Coach Leach was officially fired (those allegations are for another time, another post). Tubs should have led our Red Raiders to, at best, a 10-3 season maybe even a 9-4 season but NOT the 8-5 season we saw. For certain our bowl bid should have been to a better one...quizas even a BCS bowl. I still want "our Captain" back.
I would gladly take on any of the current job openings available in the NFL and in the NCAA. LOL!!! Anyway...as an acquaintance of mine used to say..."later days!"!!!

UConn Lady Huskies: A real streak comes to an end at 90.

Mark it on your calendars, folks.
Thursday, December 30, 2010
Stanford beats UConn, 71-59, thus ending their streak at 90.

For those who care at all about women's NCAA basketball, about streaks, about sport's history or about seeing the bully get beat, then this game was for you. It was for me indeed and I am so glad I was watching it take place on the tele.
With so many college bowls taking place, I opted to follow this game tonight as the Stanford Cardinal welcomed the UConn Lady Huskies into their venue. Perhaps with a little taste of putrid second place still in their mouths as they lost last year's Women's NCAA National Basketball Championship to the Lady Huskies of UConn. For sure vengeance on their minds to beat the Huskies on this night and a vow silently taken or perhaps just shared between themselves to end the famous UConn streak on this night. I loved this game for what it was, historical and maybe even because it brought Auriemma down a notch. I have stated that though I truly like the UConn women's b-ball program, I have never been a fan of Geno; as far as coaches goes, I
the one and only Pat Summitt (Lady Vols).
Anyhouwww...he
(Geno) was truly shaken up, pissed-off and antsy during the post-game interview. Maybe I should go as far as to say he appeared mad as hell even though he won't admit it in public. I felt badly for Maya Moore, though, as she tried to carry the team, per se, one too many times on her shoulder by herself. It has paid off in the past, but not this time, not on this night. Her lone, heroine-like antics were not enough tonight and she was unmasked...she is indeed human like the rest of us.
I predicted that Stanford might be one of three teams this year to end the UConn streak. The other two teams I mentioned were the Lady Bears of Baylor or the Lady Vols of Tennessee. All good things must come to an end, though, and this proved to be so on this eve as the Stanford Cardinal beat the UConn Lady Huskies by a score of 71 - 59.

BTW, I got a kick out of Condi Rice as she sat in the audience and cheered on for Stanford, the University where she is employed once again as a Political Science Professor.
