UConn Lady Huskies: A real streak comes to an end at 90.

Mark it on your calendars, folks.
Thursday, December 30, 2010
Stanford beats UConn, 71-59, thus ending their streak at 90.

For those who care at all about women's NCAA basketball, about streaks, about sport's history or about seeing the bully get beat, then this game was for you. It was for me indeed and I am so glad I was watching it take place on the tele.
With so many college bowls taking place, I opted to follow this game tonight as the Stanford Cardinal welcomed the UConn Lady Huskies into their venue. Perhaps with a little taste of putrid second place still in their mouths as they lost last year's Women's NCAA National Basketball Championship to the Lady Huskies of UConn. For sure vengeance on their minds to beat the Huskies on this night and a vow silently taken or perhaps just shared between themselves to end the famous UConn streak on this night. I loved this game for what it was, historical and maybe even because it brought Auriemma down a notch. I have stated that though I truly like the UConn women's b-ball program, I have never been a fan of Geno; as far as coaches goes, I
the one and only Pat Summitt (Lady Vols).
Anyhouwww...he
(Geno) was truly shaken up, pissed-off and antsy during the post-game interview. Maybe I should go as far as to say he appeared mad as hell even though he won't admit it in public. I felt badly for Maya Moore, though, as she tried to carry the team, per se, one too many times on her shoulder by herself. It has paid off in the past, but not this time, not on this night. Her lone, heroine-like antics were not enough tonight and she was unmasked...she is indeed human like the rest of us.
I predicted that Stanford might be one of three teams this year to end the UConn streak. The other two teams I mentioned were the Lady Bears of Baylor or the Lady Vols of Tennessee. All good things must come to an end, though, and this proved to be so on this eve as the Stanford Cardinal beat the UConn Lady Huskies by a score of 71 - 59.

BTW, I got a kick out of Condi Rice as she sat in the audience and cheered on for Stanford, the University where she is employed once again as a Political Science Professor.

Laughable comments by Tommy Tuberville: Another gaffe by the wanna-be Texas Tech coach in-training!

As i sat and watched one of the first of many boring, insignificant and mind-bumbling college bowls a few nights ago, a not quite "breaking news" announcement was made by ESPiN...Coach Tubs may play both Potts and Sheffield during our (Texas Tech Red Raiders) Saturday TicketCity bowl vs the Northwestern Wildcats.
"WOW...really, Tommy?"
Not knocking down your decision, Tele-Tubs, just your sense of timing. That you decide this now when Tech fans/alumni kindly began suggesting as such since the season began.
Let's give Tubs the genius award.
Note to Tele-Tubs: you better not let our Red Raiders lose this bowl game. Be "captain"-like and just run our "Air-Raid" and the spread offense which Tech is known for so we have a shot at winning this bowl.
Our Red Raiders are heavy 9.5-betting favorites with a total of 60.5 over Northwestern. The Cats haven't won a bowl since 1949. They are having to play their frosh QB, and are having to make due without 3 of their leading rushers. They were blown out in their last two games giving up a combined 118 points and 848 rushing yards. And for pete's sake - do NOT allow the absence of (former Tech defensive coordinator) coach Willis to detract from the defense rising up to the occasion either. Our d-team need not pick this game to let the Cats scratch their way to a victory.
Wreck 'em, Tech
Let's place a check mark
under the "w" column!

Womens NCAA basketball history: UConn women get 89th straight win.

Let's not be nonchalant or apathetic about this streak, folks, it is what it is and it is awesome. Coach Auriemma and his UConn Lady Huskers are not claiming to be UCLA or Coach Wooden, but people like me are saying it. Perhaps they are even better. UCLA did play the caliber teams back in their day that UConn faces these days within its own conference or even during non-conference games and tourneys. The Lady Huskies have gone everywhere (not just regionally) and made it quite difficult for the most part for other women's NCAA basketball teams to compete against them. Usually playing blow-out games versus their opponents with the exception of maybe the Lady Bears of Baylor, the Stanford women or the Lady Vols of Tennessee.
Hey, I am no Auriemma fan; this gal is a die-hard Pat Summitt fanatic. In fact Geno (born Luigi Auriemma, March 23, 1954 in Montella, Italy) quite repulses me at times with his brazen attitude and cockiness. But I guess that, too, is what it is. But at the end of the day, by the time he and his Lady huskies reached this impressive 89th victory, we cannot deny that the man is a great coach, perhaps even going as far as to say that he is a genius of his craft. According to the former and oh-so-great, Lady Husky herself, Rebecca Lobo, Geno is actually a very sensitive guy who cares a lot about his team (players - present and past); he is very likable and cares about all people and will often come to the aid of anyone whom needs assistance.
Again I stress that Geno does not compare himself to coach Wooden. Instead he separates himself from the great coach of UCLA fame. He does not want comparisons or verbal accolades that will attach his current accomplishment to that of the Bruins team ('71-'74). He is ecstatic that his Lady Huskies reached the 89 win mark - and more than likely will add even more victories to the streak and maybe even get more national championships than his current 7. He merely wants his Lady Huskies recognized for what they have attained with win #89. right here, right now! The lady Huskies are also not trying to compare themselves to the UCLA Bruins team that first reached the 89 win mark. They also want their own separate recognition. No demands for it, but would like the respect (maybe even lauds - quiet or loud) that the streak and the team clearly deserves. They are not asking for much - just merely what they earned...trying for the streak or not, they attained it and it was great - is great!
Coach Auriemma may not be coach Wooden, but Wooden was not even Wooden back in the day when his team first reached the 89 win streak. The UCLA Bruins were not the great team of the 70s when they reached the streak. It is our apathy I believe which keeps us all from being able to recognize greatness in present-day life instead allowing history and persons down the road, per se, to decide such things. Maybe the apathy is actually cowardice on our behalf in not wanting to acknowledge such greatness and such feats because we may find ourselves on the wrong side of the majority for now. Instead leaving such praise for others in the future who have had the benefit of time allowed to pass to be able to cite such greatness.
But why does greatness for the most part have to take so long to be recognized. Why can't we just admit to those things as they occur, in their present day history. Why are we so unwilling to take the bull by the horn and deem something so special, awesome and rare as it occurs. Why can't we define our own greatness today as it happens instead of leaving it to persons in the future to deem it as such. Persons who may not have even been born when greatness was happening or much too young to remember; they merely deem such things because it was written in the history books.
I say 'way the hell to go!' to coach Geno and his Lady Huskies for what they did on Tuesday, December 21st, 2010. I was here. I saw it on the tele. I am old enough to remember it. It truly was no small feat. It was fantastic! It was wonderful! It was just freaking awesome!
As I close I want to add that there should be less and less teams out there vying against UConn that end up losing by such huge, ridiculous points or end up losing to UConn at all. The time to kick up the notch and set the bar higher in women's NCAA basketball is upon us and it is in large due to the greatness that currently is Geno Auriemma and his Lady Huskies.
I'm just sayin...
Upset alert for UConn:
either Baylor, Stanford or maybe even Tennessee
will hand them their first upset since their streak!!!

All Things Texas Tech: Grading ole Tommy's Texas Tech Inaugural-Coaching Season!

Lets' begin by just looking at the picture below, it says a lot about Tommy's last season with Auburn U in 1998. The Tigers record was an awful 5-7.
It's funny, maybe too uncanny, but for sure hurtful in a way to Red Raider devotees everywhere that this season Auburn, just two years of ridding itself of Tommy (he resigned is how the story goes), it is set to play in the BCS National Championship game. For certain they have earned the right to play in a BCS game. Even a song was made to denote Tub's lousy coaching titled "Wasting Away in Tommy Tuberville" by the Lexington Brothers.
I stated the above as this should have been Tech's year to go to a BCS bowl. It's hurtful to Red Raider Nation because we see Auburn's success after Tuberville left and Tech's less than average season as Tuberville landed on our campus and took over as head football coach. Tech should have instead been grand, lone, overall champions of the Big XII - finally, a title which has eluded Tech since the inception of the conference. Contenders perhaps of a national championship if but for one reason...the Tech administration went all "gangsta" on us and fired Coach Leach. They took "our Captain" and instead gave us a person who would prefer to look his best in the way he dresses versus how his team plays on the field.
Instead of earning a BCS bowl this season, Tech maybe earns a bid to play in the "Ticket City Bowl". A bowl in Dallas at the old venue which once belonged to the Cotton Bowl (the CB was moved to Cowboys Stadium). This bowl barely pays out 1 million dollars and is the first bowl to kick-off New Years Day 2011. Not the best bowl that Tech has partaken in these past few years (under Coach Leach).
The Tech admin is delusional in thinking that Tech fans/alumni should be somehow grateful that the team reached the needed 6-game winning season to be bowl eligible. That somehow Tech fans should be pleased that we are going bowling at all. That is just crazy. Like I stated in another post, going to a bowl for Texas Tech should now be the rule not the exception. Tech has been bowl eligible as most know for the past 18 seasons. Since the Big XII began, Tech is the only team to go to a bowl in consecutive years. The only Big XII team (under Coach Leach) to have players with the best grades among the country's top universities; the best graduation rates as well.
Under Tommy, Tech has already regressed as far as a bowl bid goes. If Tech even is invited to the Ticket City Bowl. Tech has already lost millions in revenue by going to a lesser bowl (one that does not pay as much as previous bowls Tech played in). I still fail to see how Tommy was supposedly behind the best-selling ticket season. Each time I saw a game (which were not many this year - which also cost Tech money) on t.v. or pictures of games at "the Jones", there were many empty seats. I heard rumors that corporations were offered good deals to buy tix in bulk to guarantee high tickets sales, but when game-time arrived, not many tix were handed out or people opted out of attending the boring often losing games. Maybe this season's games were sell-outs on paper, but not in person. People who bought tix sold in groups (e.g. UT/Weber St), attended the better-known rivalry game because of the rivalry itself, not because Tech was playing so great. That is sad! UT ticket holders were giving away the Weber St tix, but apparently there were little takers. Again - sad! All of these things combined makes me unable to see how Tech made all that money that the admin says they did. Better than under Coach Leach? Doubtful. I say Tech not only lost money in low ticket revenue sales, lost t.v. appearances, a lesser bowl bid, but in what they will eventually have to hand over to Coach Leach. The Tech admin should have just sided with Coach Leach and had his back instead of playing "judas" in how they fired him.
Now do not get me wrong, I love my Red Raiders, all things Texas Tech, but the bad taste that was left in our mouths by the administration's shady and negative actions last year is something I am NOT willing to remain "mum" about - I will continue to bitch and complain when things go awry for our football program under the Tuberville reign. After all, Tommy did not inherit a bad team. There is absolutely no excuse for Tech having had the mediocre record it had this season. Tommy had caliber players return this season and an excellent system to draw from since the days of "our Captain"; the days of "Air Raid", the awesome spread-throw offensive days. Tommy just refused to continue the traditions to make his own. Never mind he took players who were brought to the Tech program to play a certain type of system and tried to turn them into something else. Tommy should have waited to make such radical changes for a year at the very least. He should have allowed the players to play the system they knew, the system that the players received their scholarships (or walk-on privileges) to play through this season then Tubs could have waited to draft his kind of players. Tommy waited so late to give in to the pleas of many fans/alumni to finally allow his players to run the "Air Raid" show. A move which is what helped win more games in the end when the win column needed it. Perhaps if Tubs had begun the season allowing "Air Raid" and such to continue, Tech would have won the games it lost. There was no Big XII team on Tech's schedule this season that Tech should not have been able to beat...e.g. Iowa St, UT, A&M, even OU! Coach Leach started and left behind a strong football dynasty. Tommy has no excuse for letting Tech's season end the way he did. But then we must remember and take into account how he let his Tigers "burn" in the end - only here at Tech a year and already Tubs has allowed our beloved team to begin to spiral downwards.
The man is stubborn. From the get-go at Tech, his ego must have seen a Lucifer-like caricature on his shoulder that told him not to listen to Tech fans/alumni to not run the spread or "Air Raid". However, closer to the end of the season, it seems that a more angelic-like creature knocked the other demonic-like one off his shoulder and started advising Tubs to cooperate. For Tech seriously needed him to hand them over another winning season - fans/alumni were not kidding around and were mad as hell. It would not be the best season since the days of "the Captain" but maybe it would be good enough to fool the fans/alumni (NOT) and for sure good enough to merely appease the Tech administration (they would beat grateful for anything these days, for sure they would eat their mothers if needed).
For all those negative, stupid things that the Tech administration did to push our football program down several notches, and for making sure our pride was once again stomped on like the old SWC days. For their (admin) dishonesty and lack in accountability and integrity, for ridding itself unfairly and unjustly of Tech's all-time successful coach and bringing in the likes of Tubs (who is persona non grata at Auburn), I grade the admin an "F".
As for Tubs and company, just because you (coaching staff) may be new to Tech, NONE of you are new to coaching on the collegiate level and once again, you did NOT inherit a bad team. Your have NO EXCUSE for your lousy coaching. You did not take over a sloppy football program loaded with of a bunch of newbies. Most of our players were experienced, veteran (sophomores, juniors, seniors) players. Many were of high caliber, and clutch players. They were well-coached in previous years. Seasoned and ready to begin another successful year. Instead Tommy began this season by firing and replacing our previous coaching staff and kept not a one. His right to do so, but at least keep a coach or two to help with the transition. Tubs brought on a staff accustomed to a different coaching system more popular in another conference. Tubs did not just ignore Tech's previous system, but a system best known to the Big XII conference. Under Tubs, Tech was now playing a system so different but yet so a-typical and elementary that several Big XII teams knew exactly how to counter each and every play and our team suffered and was beaten time and time again. Mainly Tech took a beating because they were playing with confusion and no real direction. Too many games were lost that should have been sure wins. Tech was used to playing in a league that runs the spread and passes quite often versus the style that Tubs brought with him from the east which mainly runs and relies way too much on defense. This inaugural-coaching season under Tubs and his "tellies", Tech was succumbed to playing "pop Warner-like football". For all of that, Tommy, you also get an "F".
And don't you dare think that Tech fans/alumni are grateful that our beloved Red Raiders finally became bowl-eligible at the end of this season under your first reign over them. It was expected of them to reach such a feat; the team expected it of themselves as well. Our Red Raiders began this season ready for better than a 7-5 season. Ready for a better bowl bid than what we are in line to get to this year. You took an awesome team and made them mediocre at best and you continue to appear apathetic about the losses. Your less than successful bid at taking over where "our Captain" left off and your nonchalant attitude over it continues to sicken me, but I remain aware. I am watching you. Raider-Nation is watching you. Stop blaming others going forward because this upcoming season is on you and only you - beginning with post-season play and whatever (lesser and cheaper) bowl Tech plays in, it is all on you, sir!!! Our motto here at Texas Tech is: "From here it's possible"...learn it, live it
and raise your grade or you won't last.

All things Texas Tech: A deer and a steer! Tech 14- Texas 24, an awful game for both teams!

Last night's game was almost unbearable to watch! Why?
Two things...1) Taylor Potts 2) Little to no Tech offense to back-up the awesome play of our Tech defense. Yes, it was our defense who first scored the first points, the first touchdown of only two which, Tech would manage to put up on the score board for the entire game. The only points Tech would actually have for the entire game came in the first half - zip in the second half. The Tech defense kept them in the game and kept UT from running away with the game thus keeping it a low-scoring game for them (UT) for the first time this season.

Taylor Potts looked like the quintessential "deer caught in the headlights". But don't give the Texas qb or their offense too many accolades for the 24 points they barely managed to squeeze together by the end of the game. Garrett Gilbert also was rattled the entire game. Gilbert and his offense only mustered just one touchdown themselves. The rest of their points came the way of their defense. Gilbert played the role of a steer in this game, folks. He played like he had been castrated, while our Potts played like he just wanted to surrender the ball each time he took a snap. Especially when he was in shot-gun, he merely ran backwards in attempts to ward off the Texas OT's instead of trying to scramble inside, he simply lacked confidence in his O-line and would leave the pocket. Potts was just as rattled if not more than Gilbert the entire game. Potts gave Tech no chance whatsoever to win this game. The Tech offense overall just stunk up The Jones last night. Baron Batch could not run the ball and he looked pathetic each time he tried running with it. The most yards Batch managed to gain were when Potts threw an interception and Batch ran after the Texas defensive player who caught it; Batch managed to catch up to the defender and tackled him a few yards short of crossing the plane.
Tech's hopes looked really good in the final quarter there for a short-lived while. Gilbert looked like he was driving his offense towards another touchdown and Tech fans were just ready to throw our hands up in surrender mode. But then our defense caught their second wind after being tired out obviously after having had to be on the field for way too long, for way too much playing time, and they stood up to the task and managed to stop the Texas O-line as they were near the Tech 27 yard line. Then it happened, Tech's cornerback (#7) Ford did the unspeakable, he went rogue and taunted the Texas receiver as he stopped him from gaining yards thus a first down. A stupid thing to do. Although the Texas defenders were taunting the Red Raiders from time to time and had just gotten away with having done so the very drive which saw Tech get stopped cold. Ford's taunting call cost Tech dearly and gave the Longhorns a first down. A first down which would allow Gilbert and company to put together another drive which would help them get their final touchdown of the night. Unfortunately for Tech, this was the touchdown which would put the final nail in the coffin, per se. The game was out of reach for certain as time was running out and Tech was now down by 10 instead of three points. Unlike previous years when Tech had better quarterbacks who could incite confidence in his offensive line and in Tech fan's, instead Potts just brings out the fear in everyone around him due to his own fear and lack of confidence. Each time our Tech offense took the field in the second half, you could hear a pin drop as Tech fan's stopped breathing because they just knew that Potts was not going to do anything good, the lack of being able to breathe due to the fact that Potts would more so do something stupid rather than something positive.
I am not sure what Tuberville has up his sleeve going further into the season but for sure he needs to consider replacing Potts. He needs to stop being so damn arrogant and stubborn and just admit that Tech's chances for winning a game are not good at all in the hands of one Taylor Potts. Tuberville really needs to replace Potts and give Sheffield a shot of being the Tech starting qb. Even the third string qb Seth Doege would be better in the qb position than Potts. With Potts leading any Tech drive, their chances diminish and the game clearly goes to the Pot.

Dallas Cowboys: Season Opener v/Skins: 7 Seconds of torture

In professional bull riding a rider has 8 seconds to stay on top of a bull as it broncs up and down, back and forth, to and fro all the while trying to throw said rider off its back. Last nights Dallas Cowboy's game was kind of like a bull ride only it lasted one second less and was broken down into two rides. The first one lasting four seconds and the second one lasting three seconds and these were the leading characters in each one: Wade Phillips (Dallas Head Coach), Jason Garrett (Dallas Offensive Coordinator), Alex Barron (Boys Right Tackle), Tony Romo (Boys QB), Miles Austin (Boys WR), Mike Shanahan (Washington Head Coach), and Brian Orakpo (Skins Outside Linebacker).
Each short ride found the 'Boys getting thrown off the bull, but in different ways. The first throw-off-the-bull lasted four seconds and went like this...Jason Garrett (w/Wade Phillips not arguing it nor Romo) simply called a pretty stupid, obsolete play when there really was no need for it. As things went awry with it, perhaps Romo should have called an audible or just thrown the ball away. My gosh there were just four petty seconds left to play in the first half of the game, which was pretty boring and saw the respective defensive lines play way better than either offensive lines, what in the world possessed Garrett and Phillips to go for that play instead of taking a knee and settling for being down just three points. Just three points. That is not a bad point spread to be down by after playing 30 minutes of football. Take a knee, go into the locker for half-time and re-group. Nope, not our Dallas O-staff. Garrett calls the awful play which goes bad almost immediately...Romo barely gets the ball out of his own hands, the receiver barely catches it then fumbles the ball which the Redskin's player then recovers and runs into their end-zone for a quickie touchdown. Washington goes into their locker room now ahead by 10 points. The only true touchdown they would score the entire night. McNabb not at all impressive the entire first half nor the rest of the game. He and his O-line never contributed to their score at all, but then McNabb was not the player or QB whom was supposed to shine tonight. Tonight that responsibility fell on our QB, Tony Romo, and his O-line. Our offense sucked and let us Dallas fans down. Instead of Dallas going into half-time with points on the board, or just down by three points, they instead helped the Skins add to their lead. For certain a momentum switching moment and perhaps even a game deciding blunder indicative of what would come our way in the final two quarters of play for Dallas.
The end of the game, which I have dubbed the second half of the 7 second bull-ride was just as painful to watch. This time it was neither the fault of Romo, Garrett or Phillips, it was the fault of one Alex Barron (#71) whom does not know how to block to save his life. Barron the player who Dallas took this year and added to their O-line, the very player who just happened to lead the league in most penalties last year (7) when he was a St. Louis Ram. Barron needs to learn how to tackle properly. Since when did a bear-hug and a neck choke constitute any kind of tackling in the world of football! It never has. You tackle straight on and rely on force, strength, and intelligent reaction to lead you towards a proper tackle especially in a dire situation such as this one. Some say that had Barron not tackled Brian Orakpo that Romo surely would have been sacked. Maybe so - maybe not. Had Barron just tackled properly I believe Romo would have been okay. After all, Romo was already scrambling and had found his way from Orakpo and into a safe position -as safe as possible- on the field to throw that pass into the hands of Miles Austin. A game-winning throw/catch! One that would've, should've, could've been had it not been for one Barron and his bumbling football antics!
Yes, this game was boring and fell short of the kind of performance Dallas should have had. But let's not completely overlook Mike Shanahan's coaching guise and abilities. The man is a genius at the coaching helm. No small potatoes and Dallas should have been ready for him and his team. The expectations at the QB position, as I stated above, for an outstanding game fell upon Romo, and though he led some outstanding drives, Romo was simlpy not up to par at all the entire 60 seconds of this game. The Skin's coaching staff not so much better than that of Dallas, but they did hold their own a whole lot better this night especially on the side of their defensive skills. Dallas kicked themselves in the back-side...Washington did not beat them.
Dallas is fully capable of winning its division as most sport's pundits have been saying and I totally agree. Dallas now needs to really re-group after this lousy game and go back to playing sound football...football 101. Leave the gimmicky plays to teams with less experience and less talent. Or if Dallas is really gonna make that kind of play, leave it for when Dallas really needs to score and is down by a signifcant point spread - not for when Dallas is down by just three points going into half-time. It made Dallas look like a high school team rather than the professional team with championship-caliber skills. And for Pete's sake, learn to block properly, hold onto the ball and please-please-please figure out a way to cut back on all those stupid penalties. Let's lead the league in things more positive NOT in penalties incurred.
Next week sees our Dallas Cowboys play versus the Chi-town Bears. Let's be ready because the Bears are not going to be an easy win even if Dallas is playing in their own back-yard, per se. The Skins were supposed to be an easy victory for Dallas and we now know how that prediction turned out. Dallas is way better than this. The combined seven seconds of last night's game were grueling for Dallas fans to watch indeed. Next time a Dallas game winds down with three seconds or four seconds or however many seconds it may be and they find themselves playing catch up, let's hope they remember tonight's game and are smarter. Worker smarter - not harder and this especially goes to Barron - that he refrain from trying to rip off the head of any player going forward.

NFL: Taking from billionaires to pay millionaires. Solidarity within the NFLPA!

Skip "Keep it Real" Bayless did not want to see the players in last nights NFL game (Vikings vs Saints) come out in show of solidarity. Skip (aka: "I hate anything anyone else likes and will always oppose it") says it was a game for the fans and not the venue or the time to show that they (the players) are part of union, not a place or time for a show of solidarity. I completely disagree with Bayless, apparently as did ex-NFL player, Robert Smith, a former RB for the Minnesota Viking's. Debating Skip during this morning's ESPN episode of "First Take", Smith was passionate in his support of the NFLPA and the players show of solidarity. To paraphrase what Smith said...it is the goal of players to show the world and other players watching that when it comes to the NFL union that's a one team effort. To remind everyone of the importance of protecting and honoring the legacy of players before and after him. Matter of fact that it was equally important to protect the union and player's interest.
Like I mentioned I totally disagree with Skip "Mad at the World" Bayless and fully understand Robert Smith's passion and position in all of this. I say that the football field is the player's work-place and what better venue and time to show that they are united as one with their union regardless of what the team owners, certain fans or the likes of Skip Bayless thinks or believes.
The owners have long made billions of dollars and need to pay the players accordingly. The players made them (owners) billionaires and they (players) are the ones who risk life and limb each time they play and practice. The players are the ones who will succumb to a lifetime of physical pain as their injuries will surely follow them forever. Whether that pain is already occurring or will occur later in life, it is sure to come. The owners will never have to deal with that kind of physical pain and they should be glad that their players are willing to risk it all. I know the game of football is as much a business of making money and gaining notoriety for the players as it is for the owners, but the players have more to lose in the end.
As fans I believe we should stand firm with the players not the owners. The players are in a way representative of the blue-collar work-force which is America. The owners represent Wall Street in all their greed at the ready to lie, cheat and steal to get their paychecks. The players can be viewed as the millions of Americans who lost homes due to bad mortgage deals (sub prime loans) and the owners are the banks who mucked it all up then expected a financial hand-out from the government. As fans of the game of football, we can put ourselves in the position of the government - just for this once to assist with the analogy of all of this. We hated when our actual government bailed out the financial institutions, it only helped out the banks and such in the end as the American worker still received zero, zip, zilch. As fans placing ourselves in the position of government during this union dilemma in the NFL, let's NOT give the owners (financial institutions) a bail-out. Let's support the players (the workers) and help them get what is due to them. In the long run, the players win and so will the fans. After all, us fans go to the games to see the players play not the team owners.
If we are united with the players and try to see things through their eyes, we can send a loud message to the owners who not only lie, cheat and steal from the players, but they do the same to us fans. How? By expecting larger, fancier stadiums and taking it to us fans to help pay for it all via bonds and higher taxes. Then they (the owners) have the freaking audacity to increase the price of tickets at the very stadiums we, the fans, helped them to build. Everything in the stadium goes up in price - everything!!! The owners just keep on getting richer. The owners cannot share their wealth with us fans, though lowering the ticket prices even for some games would be nice, but the owners sure as heck can and should share their wealth with their respective players.

All Things Texas Tech: Even on the worse day, it's always better to be a Red Raider than an Aggie!

All Things Texas Tech: Tech 35 - SMU 27: You can call it a win, but...

Even back during the SWC days, Texas Tech could always muster a bigger margin of victory over the SMU "donks" then they managed to swing this past Sunday.
Sure Texas Tech won in the end, and like my own Mom said, a win is a win. True that - true that; however, if Tech can only manage to beat the likes of SMU by a mere 8 points - how in the world are our Red Raiders going to figure out a win over the other opponents on their schedule this season…especially the really tough opponents which shall remain nameless.
The worse part being the fact that Tech had significant leads throughout the game over SMU only to allow it to diminish by 8 points by the end of the game. AT half-time Tech lead the Pony's 21- 7 then by 35 - 17 after three quarters. SMU lost the ball four times and Tech only managed to convert their errors into points on two occasions. The "Potts to Leong" connection soon enough lost its luster as SMU figured things out and started covering better. Tubberville's decision to go for the fourth down ala that “QB sneak” quickly went awry (Potts fumbled and Batch recovered). Coach Leach would more than likely have succeeded in that instance. WHY? Because that is the kind of coach Mike Leach is…always more savvy, comfortable and having more than one play in his medulla oblongata in a fourth down situation. Besides most opposing coaches know that Coach Leach was more apt to go for it on fourth down so it more so rattled the nerves of the opponents; often Techs offense was able to get the first down by drawing the defense off-sides. Tubberville's offense did not appear comfortable the entire evening. Going on fourth down when he did only made us Tech fans remember how Potts seems to lose his nerve during the difficult times. Potts is clearly not a clutch QB...not now, not ever. Potts is too timid. He wasn't even relaxed enough in his own back-yard at "The Jones" so how are us Tech fans supposed to feel about him when Tech has to play the away games. I posted on my FB wall yesterday that Potts seemed to "wreak" when it was time to "wreck".
Team Leach was closely watching. And NO, we are not Texas Tech haters, we love our university, our athletic programs and our athletes...we want Tech to succeed. But, if the SMU game is any indicator of what Tubberville is going to bring to Lubbock, which is not a good defense or offense, then it's going to be a long, rough season for Tech fans. Plus it will only prove that Team Leach was justified in being livid last year when Myers, Hance and Pierce fired Coach Leach; when they brought an end to our "Pirate Nation" era and quite possibly an end to our "Air Raid". The overall conclusion could very well be that those three unjustly brought an end to the success of our Red Raider football program; an end to the success and notoriety celebrated under the helm of Coach Mike Leach. The bumbling Tech admin (the "three horsemen") alone who took away Leach and gave us Tubberville and company. And for the record, Tommy Tubberville does not replace the true meaning of our beloved "Double T" logo.
Like I stated, Tubberville's team was not impressive at all…Potts was never comfortable in his QB position, he was hot and cold - from one extreme to another, but never in the middle. The WR's seemed to be the lone heroes of the day (Leong and Lewis). Not even our kicker (the "walk-on" himself) Matt Williams (aka: "Lynwood") could add points on the board for Tech; two of his kicks blocked by SMU's Hunt. I just hope Matt is not going to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors, Donnie Carona and Cory Fowler.
All I know is that when my beloved Texas Tech Nation has to bite its nails and watch a game wind down like it did versus SMU and think "we could lose this game"…it is time to get serious about what changes need to come to pass. First and foremost I strongly believe that the starting QB position should be changed from Potts to Sheffield aka: "Sticks"! Our running game needs major improvement as well. Coach Leach was known for the spread and for the passing game, yet our running game seemed more successful under his watch then it did all day long on Sunday under the new Tubberville watch; a run and shoot system which is supposed to be more of a Tubberville forte, but was executed more successfully in years past under “Our Captain”. As for the running game, Batch and Stephens need to strengthen their play ability ASAP. Batch turned out to be a "Leach Hater" and turned Judas to Mike Leach's cause ultimately going around saying some nasty things about our former coach. Baron, you now need to "put up or SHUT ‘TF’ UP!"..."put your money where your mouth is". Your play on Sunday also wreaked when it should have wrecked.
No, sir, Team Leach never stated we hated Texas Tech, we were just disappointed in the actions of our crooked administration (namely the three aforementioned men aka: the "three horsemen"). Disappointed at the year-long+ scheming between the three men with their planning and then firing Coach Leach followed by the numerous lies they then told after they finally succeeded at their dirty deed to rid themselves of the most successful coach in Tech history. Team Leach was formed and we members came together to ask the questions which needed to be asked…questions which we as Texas Tech fans and/or alumni deserved to be answered. We were merely holding the Tech admin responsible and accountable for such atrocious acts against our Coach and indirectly against our university, our team and our football program's overall success.
Team Leach was watching for sure this past Sunday, and we have more questions...this time for Tubberville and company…Tubberville aka: “the savior” of our ticket sales. The new head coach who allegedly helped to sell more tickets than any coach at Tech in our history. Could that largely be because Tech just added several thousand more seats to "The Jones"...or maybe the fact that "controversy sells"! Don't give Tubberville too much credit. One, he was doing part of his job by touring the country and trying to sell tix. Second, as always is in history, the monetary factor will always grow because of the impact the economy has...i.e. the outrageous cost of ticket prices from one season to the next. Meaning? Not one game this year sees Texas Tech fans able to purchase them for under $40 a game. In seasons not so long ago, my family and I attended games that went for $25 a ticket. That fact alone (increase in ticket costs) is why Tech not Tubberville sold more tix and made the millions of buck$. Losing Coach Leach served more as an impact for huge ticket sales as fans everywhere are wanting to see the Texas Tech games just to see what the new head coach will bring to Raider Nation.
Just one game out, though, and Tubberville showed much negative and little positive, but I shall not give up. I will continue to have high hopes for my Red Raiders, always proud to be part of Tech than not. I will hope for better games and victories, and will allow for anyone to tell me "I told you so"...this only allowed when Texas Tech wins more games than not at the end of the year and succeeds to another bowl bid or maybe a BCS (ahem). That is when and only when I will allow myself to be approached by anyone with that comment…“I told you so”.
Next week sees our beloved Red Raiders at UNM...better luck with that game/that team than this last game versus SMY, guys! For now...Team Leach continues to watch and pose questions.

All Things Texas Tech: Masked Rider Named One of AP's Top College Mascots!

I did not like the AP story too much when I read it earlier tonight (Saturday) because I disagreed with the rankings. Then I read another AP story by an idiot writer from the Kansas City Star; he made fun of Tech for being glad our mascot was at #9. The writer went on to state that he thought Texas Tech (Gerald Myers) was "funny" (though to me he insinuated "stupid") for the press release of the "wonderful news" that the AP poll picked Tech's Masked Rider at #9. Like being #9 is bad out of the hundreds of other mascots out there. Maybe that idiot writer was on to something - NOT - I refuse to agree with a writer who works for a paper that represents such Big XII (north) schools as Kansas-St, Kansas University and Mizzou. The very three universities that were scrambling for a conference home not so long ago. You remember back when...during that fiasco a few weeks ago when the Big XII was about to fall apart after the Huskers and Buffs announced their new conference affiliations. UT, Tech, A&M, OU and OK ST were going to have other conference homes, but no other conference(s) came running to snatch up K-St, KU or MU. The very same three schools whose respective mascots were not even on in the top 12 of this "Top College Mascot" list.
NOTE: My sincere apologies for pointing that out to alumni/fans of those three universities,
as I was merely being contrary to the writer who posted the story who has the affiliation with your three schools.
No, sir, I do not agree with that writer's remarks or his opinion, but for sure I do NOT agree with the AP poll's "Top College Mascot" list either! Not at all! For one, Bevo should not be ahead of our Masked Rider. The "Beve" is a freaking bull being lead around the stadium by a bunch of guys. When he (Bevo) feels like being lead around - that is. Most of the time he is somewhat sedated to keep him calm. You call that interesting. Nor do I agree that "Ralphie" the Colorado Buff be at #1. That mascot is worse than Bevo and also has to be lead around. Again...B-O-R-I-N-G!!! Even the stupid Stanford Tree was ranked higher at #6 and technically Stanford has "no official mascot" so how can choosing the tree to be on this list even be justified. I admire and respect the heck out of the school and its academic standing in the U.S. and all around the world, but a freaking tree?!! Yep, this poll was bogus. Plus, I dislike that some Native American mascots are still being used (i.e. Chief Osceola, Florida State #3 and War Eagle, Auburn #5), but it's their (university) right to do so if no one or no organization has motioned otherwise in any court of law to deny the usage of those mascots so for that I won't begrudge anyone or any institution their Constitutional right.
For those of us who know the story behind the inception of our beloved Masked Rider, those who have seen it in person...you may agree with what I wrote. Maybe you won’t agree with everything I wrote, but you will with the very fact that our mascot should at least be ranked in the top 5. I would place it at # 1, but that would be biased of me - I admit it. Maybe the AP voters should be required to attend the games to see the mascots before they vote if they have not done so because it is my personal feeling that they have not seen our Masked Rider in person - in all of its glory when it enters the stadium. For anyone who has never seen the Masked Rider in person or been at a football game when this wonderful mascot comes charging out onto the field, horse and all, leading the way for our Red Raider football team then you are missing quite a show. You certainly have NOT experienced the awe, the chills and the pride that our fans feel at seeing that wonderful spectacle. Words fail to describe it. You just have to see it in person to fully appreciate it - an experience you won't soon forget. For me and my family it is like seeing it for the first time every time I/we see it. But that's just me/us!

AP's Top College Mascots (list):
1) Ralphie the Buffalo, Colorado
2) Uga, Georgia
3) Chief Osceola, Florida State
4) Mike the Tiger, LSU
5) War Eagle, Auburn
6) Stanford Tree
7) Bevo, Texas
8) The Mountaineer, West Virginia
9) The Masked Rider, Texas Tech
10) Sparty, Michigan State
11) The Leprechaun, Notre Dame
12) The Fighting Duck, Oregon

AROD: 600th homer: Incredible or credible.

An asterisk by his recent accomplishment - marred by steroids or not.

For what it is worth as he is by no means a fav player of mine (I like Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte to name a few),
let's allow Alex Rodriguez his day and let the chips fall as they may at a later time.

TEXAS TECH: Dora's back!

I am actually back to blogging about all things "Texas Tech Sports" related.
Feeling strongly discouraged by the antics which occurred during last year's bowl season when the Texas Tech ADministration decided to abruptly end Coach Mike Leach's coaching contract from our Texas Tech football program, I stopped blogging about Texas Tech. Things were sad and just felt wrong. I could not grasp it or put my hand on anything specific until I found "Team Leach" on Facebook and figured out why I was feeling so down. And NO, I am not opposed to Texas Tech. In fact I am still as enamored now that I am in my 40s by the glorious university located in Lubbock as I was when I was just a little girl of about 5.
Excuse me as I go off on a little tangent here, but... as a person born with a severe cleft palate - although young, but still old enough to remember certain events - I remember those earlier years of doctor's visits and hospital stays in Lubbock and of seeing that grand old campus for the first time!
And each time thereafter when my family had to pack up our stuff and head over there (Lubbock) for what always turned out to be an entire day just for a routine visit with my E.N.T. specialist (Dr Koch).
Whether a routine visit or when I was placed in the hospital (used to be Methodist) numerous times for various operations, I will always remember my first sighting of the
university.
During hospital stays I remember the students and the residents and doctors who were attending or had attended Texas Tech. They were the friendliest people and always made me feel safe and welcome. They were clearly proud of their affiliation with Tech and of being alumni. Those awesome attitudes I was around and seeing the campus, even if we never stopped for a better view, always put a smile on my face and believe me, I needed one.

Anyway- the Texas Tech administration and their pathetic way of handling the Coach Leach situation is what muddled my thoughts and feelings. They soured me to a lot of things. They made me despise authority such as theirs and how they misused it to do their dirty deed of ridding themselves of the most successful football coach that Tech had ever had. A hugely beloved coach by Tech fans everywhere. The "Adam James Story" has yet been truly uncovered but soon the scam that it was will be undone and all will know what a creep Adam and his father, Craig, were and surely will continue to be. The older James with controversy plaguing his collegiate football career while attending SMU sure to be doing the same to his son's years while at Tech. Destroying another football program without the blink of an eye or care in the world. Sure they (James's) as much a pawn to the Tech ADmin in using them to fire Coach Leach and not having to pay out that huge bonus rightly owed to Coach Leach. Yes, indeed as much as Tech used the James's the James's used Coach Leach and Tech to overshadow Adam's ineptness at being a hard-working, dedicated team-player instead they tried another tactic and tried in vain to sway Adam James's bad behavior and laziness into that "closet incident".
My problem not being with the university or the team, or even the new head coach, just with the Admin and the likes of Kent Hance, Guy Bailey and Gerald Myers (a.k.a. "the three horsemen"). All three men who had a hand in dismantling our Tech football program and coaching staff only to bring in a man to coach our team who is more known for his GQ attire, "jumping ship" coaching style and for not having a loyal bone in his body. Coach Tuberville's m.o. is defense while Tech, under the care and tenure of Coach Leach, made headlines with its pass offense, our "Air Raid" was loud and proud. Surely our spread offense style under Coach Leach cleared the way for almost all Big XII teams to follow suit with similar offense styles - even though most coaches will never admit it.
What's right is right and, well, what's wrong is...
What the Tech ADmin did was wrong when they fired Coach Leach the way they did and everything negative against them and Tech since the cowardly games, per se, began. The "three horsemen" took it upon themselves to fire a coach who was more popular then the three of them combined. What a thing to worry about instead of worrying about Tech becoming a possible "Tier One" university and making sure that came to fruition. The "three horsemen" worried about losing out on an $800,000 bonus pay-out fairly owed to Coach Leach. Instead for an entire year they plan and scheme on how to fire the coach and risk owing millions instead of thousands to him (Leach). The "three horsemen" did use a bum like Adam and his super-bum father, Craig, as a stepping-stone towards ridding themselves of Coach Leach whom they were afraid was acquiring too much power with his popularity to justify their firing of him (Leach) only to appear like fools and money-hungry idiots. Instead of just making things difficult for themselves, they ("three horsemen") took the entire university and anyone associated with it down with them; they made all of us look bad in the eyes of the world that was watching us so closely for those several months. Hance, Bailey and Myers did not care about the university as they said they did. Yes, in the end it was/is about money and narcissism. The very narcissism they ("three horsemen") cited Coach Leach for is the one the three of them were influenced by when they began their witch hunt almost one year to the date of when they unjustly fired Coach Leach.
My love of all things Texas Tech has led me back to blogging about the Double T "U", and I will never succumb to the likes or pretenses of the "three horsemen". Only we as individuals can love Tech as much, and we do not need to be inspired by anyone or anything. Our love for the university is the only thing that truly matters, and only we should pick and choose what means the most to us. Only we can decide for ourselves what is right and wrong and do something about it or not. Only we can decide to take chicken shit and turn it into chicken salad.
That is my current m.o. and what will lead me into the future as Tech prepares itself for another football season. Will my heart be the same? Yes, it is healing after the Tech ADmin tried to rip it apart by their low-down antics last December right before the Alamo Bowl. I will miss Coach Leach and his style (on and off the field) and his character. He brought us (Tech) "Pirate Nation" and for that we are all truly grateful. He brought us (Tech) that awesome "pass/spread offense" and for that and the notoriety and successes that came with it, we are humbled but still thankful. He did as much for Tech
(and us) back during those days of glory as Tech surely did for him. Except now Tech is able to "clean itself off" of all the mud it threw around and continue in all its grandeur, but for Coach Leach, the fight is still on-going and he is still a coach sans a coaching job and coaching home. Here's wishing Coach Leach continued luck and success elsewhere whether on or off the field...may he turn his chicken shit into chicken salad as well.
For Texas Tech and the rest of us fans...
"Long Live the Matador"! INDEED!

2010 Le Tour de France: Stage 19, Sunday, July 25th: CONTADOR vs. SCHLECK!

What a Tour. Never a dull moment. Only disappointed that the overall GC championship, the winner of the maillot jaune/yellow jersey/mellow johnny will forever be marked with an asterisk for many cycling fans because of the "mechanical problems" (dropped chain) during Monday's stage 15.
Per Velo News: The coincidence of Alberto Contador’s GC differential over Schleck following the stage-19 time trial — 39 seconds, the same amount of time that Schleck lost to Contador over the Port de Balés due to a mechanical problem — wasn’t lost on Schleck"
Andy regrets losing his brother during this Tour's stage 3. This year Fränk went out after a bad crash during stage 3 when he was sent to hospital with a broken collar bone, broken in three places.
Fränk Schleck came into the Tour fresh off winning the overall at the Tour of Switzerland and the Luxembourg national road championship, and younger brother Andy has said on more than one occasion that he believed Fränk had the form to finish on the podium of this year’s Tour. “I’m satisfied with the whole Tour. I know it’s going to be different next year,” Schleck said. “It’s not been a super Tour. Personally I’m really happy, I’ve won two stages and taken the best young rider’s competition, but if I would have had Fränk out there in the mountains, it would have been a different story. I know that, my team knows that, and everyone around me knows if he would have been there, it would have been different. But we leave behind what’s behind.”
Guaranteed that it will be Contador v/Schleck all over again in 2011. Ahem...make that a Schleck v/Contador rivalry as Andy has to prove himself as a true rival, challenger to Alberto in le Tour de France 2011!
I am quite certain that both Andy and his brother Fränk will challenge Contador next year during le Tour 2011. If both Schleck brothers remain healthy with no incidents (same for Contador) through-out next year's Tour, let's up the ante - if you will - and just call it what it should be...a Schleck and Schleck v/Contador fight to the end.
In my personal opinion, Alberto may have excellent domestiques helping him on his Team Astana but none better to match what the Schleck brothers can do as they pull together especially in the mountains. My advice to Alberto, go find yourself a stronger team or at least three domestiques who will be able to assist you as if you were their own brother.
My how I look foward to the 2011 Le Tour de France. Sometimes known as the "Tour de Chance" like this year seems to be for the cycling world.
